How it all started...

Initial outreach by Michael Rast (GEO Secretariat) to Chris Justice (UMD) to build the Agriculture Societal Benefit Area for GEO. 

2007
July

Chris Justice organized two foundational workshops hosted by FAO, Rome (hosted by John Latham) with 25 participating global institutions led to the launching the GEO Agricultural Monitoring Task (Ag-07-03). 

ISRO provides support for Jai Singh Parihar and Sujay Dutta (ISRO/SAC) to serve as a virtual Secretariat for the Task, with Jinlong Fang as the focal point in the GEO Secretariat.

2008

Thematic workshops were held on Crop Area Estimation and Satellite Rainfall Estimation at EC-JRC, Ispra (hosted by Jacques Delince) 

The Chinese Academy of Sciences hosted a workshop in Beijing which formulated the concept for the Joint Experiment on Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM).

Ag-07-03 outreach presentations in Brazil, Italy, Almaty, Kazakhstan and Argentina (by Carlos De Bella)  

2009
November

GEO-Canada hosts SAR training on Agriculture Monitoring in Kananaskis, Canada.

December

Thematic workshop on Climate Change and Agriculture, hosted by Jai Singh Parihar - ISRO SAC in Ahmedabad , India

2010
September

JECAM Coordination Workshop  held in Hong Kong – Ian Jarvis & Pierre Defourny take leadership and draft implementation plan.

October

The European Commission hosted an Observation Requirements  & Coordination Workshop in Brussels, Belgium

February

Cropland mapping workshop hosted by IIASA (Steffen Fritz) in Vienna

Joao Soares (INPE) becomes GEO Secretariat focal point.

April

JECAM meeting in Curitiba, Brazil discusses G20 proposal on global agricultural monitoring.

May

GEOGLAM proposal presented to G20 Deputies in Paris.

September

G20 endorses GEOGLAM and AMIS as joint initiatives to improve agriculture market transparency and food security
